As we have been sharing this idea of home and our journey to embrace it, we have used a lot of descriptors: welcoming, belonging, maintenance, security and more. We can express a lot of what a home is in language, yet there are some aspects that are beyond words.
In 1996, I took my first trip England. I was there for 2+ weeks with a youth team on a mission working with schools and congregations in the Church of England. Throughout that trip I found places that resonated with me. We spent two days at Salisbury Cathedral and there was something wonderful and profound about that “space.” I remember walking through the cathedral grounds and sensing something deep inside of me. It was almost as though a tuning fork was resonating in my heart. I found something mystical and comforting as I wandered on those sacred acres.
Since 1996 I have spent close to a year of my life in the United Kingdom and I have had that same experience many times and in many places. In each place I was feeling the deep sense of being connected with my ancestors: with my heritage, my natural family and my spiritual roots as well.
I have witnessed Canterbury be that place of resonance for people as well. People often connect with the campus because of something in the past that happened for them on these 48 acres in Oviedo. A few folks have mentioned to me that within a few minutes of coming on to the campus they felt peace, safety and the feeling of being nurtured in the Florida landscape.
Regardless of where it may be, I would encourage us to be aware of these personal connections with land. It is maybe taking a moment to simply “be” somewhere. We feel the vibration in our heart as a tone begins to resonate. Words fall short and fail to capture what we are touching in that instant. We know we have discovered, connected, engaged and handled another dimension called Home.
