Creating Along the Journey
I have been blessed to spend time with a variety of creative people. I know a few artists that compose magnificent, inspiring art that stops me in my tracks. They take a blank canvas and with color, texture and a talent I can only dream of and present me with something that transports me to another frame of mind. Artists work in all kinds of mediums. Some are gardeners, some chefs, others are builders, decorators, actors and orators. Some artists create incredible visual art through photo, tempera, pen and ink. Others create music that stirs, soothes and inspires. These artists use their craft, their creative gift to make the world a better place.
Chief among my passions is music. I am a musician, not a great one but a musician nonetheless. As Clint Eastwood reminds me, “A man has to know his limitations.” I could never make a living as a musician. I do have several musician friends who do just that and they amaze me with their skill but more so with writing. They can compose a melody or turn of phrase and communicate something witty and worthy of reflection.
I am a firm believer that every person has gifts. Life is to be spent in cultivating these gifts for the greater good. These gifts are often nurtured by our sense of home. Some are blessed enough that their gifts and vocation collide. Some see a need in the world and their passion is to meet that need. I’ve watched people motivated by their faith and compassion change the world one person at a time. It may be something as simple as feeding the hungry.
I have a friend who purchases $5.00 gift cards from a prominent fast food establishment and hands them out to homeless people she encounters on the street corners when they are asking for food or donations. She feels prompted to do this and makes it part of her monthly budget. Something so simple yet so kind changes the world.
Her generosity to strangers could very well lead to starting a foundation, a ministry, truly making a difference. People may write a song, a book, a poem. People may sketch or paint an inspiring picture or capture an image with a camera. Some may plant gardens or build buildings. These things make the world a better place and make it a little more like home. Whether you create art or business or music or perhaps create hope and opportunity for someone in need, make the choice on your journey to home to CREATE. I believe it’s what you were made for!
“As part of my spiritual growth I am trying to be intentional about taking time to ‘Get still and listen to God.’ I can make lists, accomplish large tasks, manage just about anything, pray daily, attend church weekly yet have found myself yearning for quiet, quiet time with God. Having just matured to the age of 60 I am ready to take a back seat in life and allow God to work through me instead of trying to manage my spiritual life and time with God. At All Saint’s Episcopal Church I am part of a centering prayer group that centers in our gorgeous chapel. Centering in community in this space brings me tremendous joy.
Recently I decided to design a ‘one day retreat of Centering for myself’ and was searching for a location to do this in Orlando. Canterbury Retreat Center came to mind and they provided me full gracious Southern hospitality for 6 hours. I sat in the Church at Canterbury by myself with some spiritual books to read, a Bible, Tiaz music from my iPhone, and the overwhelming beauty of the Church and a rainbow of light streaming through the stained glass windows. God’s love and grace filled the space and I was in it, basking and soaking it up. As I departed at the end of the day my heart was full of God’s word, his voice and love for me. The hours at Canterbury empowered me to go forth in the world walking tall with God’s grace embracing me. Canterbury Retreat Center is a blessing provided to us by our Diocese and I am thankful.”
