Giving is an art. When Christmas, birthdays and anniversaries roll around, I thoroughly enjoy taking the time and effort to find the perfect gift for my wife or family or a friend. I will often do my Christmas shopping months ahead looking for the unique item to wrap and put under the tree. I listen to people and make mental notes as they might mention something they want or want to do. It is a way to show my affection and gratitude for having them in my life.
My wife is very practical. In the nearly 25 years of marriage other than her wedding and engagement ring, I have only bought her one piece of jewelry, a small silver cross that I picked up overseas. She wears it everyday. Most of the gifts I’ve gotten her are practical. Friends have criticized me when I tell them I got her a calculator, a vacuum, a garden tractor and the like. But I know my wife. These things make her happy. Beth is always cold. Living in Florida it is hard to believe, but she always carries a jacket or sweater, even in August. I will buy her sweaters and fleeces. Those make her happy too.
Home is a place of giving. We give our attention, our time, our resources, our money to make a house a home. This is probably one of the most identifiable aspects that transforms an address into a home.
Canterbury is a Home in many ways. People live, eat, play, work and make a life on our campus; most often for a few days but sometimes longer. It takes a lot to make Canterbury work. You can give to this effort. It is a worthy mission that changes the world one life at a time. We see people come to Canterbury and walk away refreshed and ready to tackle the next life moment. We see teams being built and connected to accomplish the task before them. All of this yields change making the world in which we live a better place.
Won’t you join our mission? Become a Canterbury Friend, Partner, or Champion (see below). Every gift helps us and we faithfully steward each dollar we receive. Canterbury is growing. The last 3 years have seen us grow 25% in our operation and it looks like this year we may get as high as 20% growth for2016. I wish all that was profit. What it does say is that Canterbury is reaching more people, sharing our gift of hospitality further into this world.
Currently we operate at around 15% capacity. Our vision is to be at 50% capacity in the next 5 years. That kind of growth means more staff, more repairs, more everything. Will you help? There are lots of ways you can give. For example:
- Share with us your Canterbury story.
- Invite someone to come to an event or better yet –
- Reserve Canterbury and its resources for your next event or defining moment
- Volunteer your time – you can serve, make phone calls, help do landscape…there are loads of ways you can help.
Right now consider a financial investment in Canterbury’s mission. As St. Francis prayed and we pray often… “For it is in giving that we receive.”
