Home Maintenance 2
Yesterday, I brought up the concept of attending to the “value system” of your home similarly to how you might attend to the other physical systems of your house (heating, electrical, etc).
Daily home maintenance requires staying on top of things, paying attention to details and then fixing what needs fixing. In our relationships we need that kind of daily maintenance too. Yesterday we spoke of kindness. Today it’s generosity.
When you think of being generous, you think about being liberal in what you give. There are lots of ways to be generous in your giving. You can give money and in doing so be a blessing to many people and many wonderful causes. Canterbury is a 501c3 Religious Non-Profit organization. As executive director I have a responsibility to ask people not simply to give but join us in this mission called Canterbury. Part of these 40 days is about that, sharing with you Canterbury’s mission and ministry, believing many of you on this journey will be moved to be a part of what happens here on the Canterbury campus everyday as lives are changed, faith is nurtured and transformation occurs (See below on how you can participate).
But generosity can involve more than money. You can give of your time, your skills, your resources — and in doing so the world becomes a little more like the “home” we’ve been talking about. Sometimes our little Can make a huge difference. I was reminded of this in a short little clip I saw on YouTube about the Olivet Middle School Eagles:
My favorite part about this story is that multiple lives were changed — the one who receives the gift as well as the ones who were part of giving it. One of the lines that I heard in church growing up (usually as the offering was passed), was “Remember of the words of our Lord Jesus who said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” When we are generous we all score a touchdown!
