Prayer through Iconography
The icon is a tangible symbol of the Incarnation. Though God the Father may never be represented through form, Christ consented to be revealed in flesh and while in that flesh was touched, heard and seen. In the icon, the glory of the revealed Christ is made present before our eyes. We pray, adoring the divine light that is accessible through the image and so are drawn up into the joyous life of the Trinity.
“No one could describe the Word of the Father;
But when he took flesh from you, O Theotokos,
He consented to be described,
And restored the fallen image to its former state by uniting it to divine beauty.
We confess and proclaim our salvation in word and images.”
A chance to retreat, learn, and commune with God
Teresa Harrison will be teaching icon writing, which is actually a painting process. Iconography introduces ancient Greek and Russian writing styles. This is a beginner course, but experienced iconographers will also find it rewarding. No art experience is needed, just a willingness to allow God to work through the step by step process. Each brush stroke is intended to be a prayer.
This six-day retreat includes the Eucharist, Gregorian chant, praying with icons, readings, silence, conversation, free time and social hours. Icons will be written in Jo Sonia acrylic paint and gold leaf, a medium which most closely resembles the traditional egg tempera. This year, the focus of the retreat is The Baptism of Christ and St. George and the Dragon.
