This is a regular theme in my life – rhythm. As a musician I often have to keep a “beat”. To moments come to mind from my life. I did some recording in studio and we used what is called a “click track”. While laying down a guitar track I wore some headphones and I heard a steady click that would keep me on time and as we laid down subsequent tracks all the players heard it so we would be together. While playing in a worship band for a season we used an electronic drum machine. We called him Fred. Fred was perfect, he never missed a beat and I fought with Fred constantly as he exposed my missed rhythms and timing.
Cadence; marks my time, sets a pace, changes my step. The world we live in has its own cadence and we hear it in politics, foreign affairs, economics, entertainment and every aspect of life. Families, relationships, churches, travel all mark time in one way or another.
One of the best ways for me to understand my faith is that there is a Kingdom Cadence I am called to keep step with. Different from the world it causes me to walk in a different way. It is a rhythm of love, hope, peace, kindness, mercy and joy. It bids to rise above the muck and mire of life and to have a focus on the Kingdom of God extending into this world when Christ enters the hearts and lives of people. It makes the world a better place.
I am traveling this weekend and I find myself in a foreign landscape. I popped into a small bodega to by a water and the cahier started up a conversation after I inquired about where to get some dinner. She asked what I was doing here and I told her I was teaching a leadership retreat for a church. She smiled and said, I’m a believer too! She know the kingdom rhythm and is seeking to walk it. I asked to pray for the retreat, she said she would.
The Kingdom is all around us. We need to tune our ears to hear the cadence, to walk and dance in a new way, with a spring in our step because we are loved by God and Christ has entered our lives. People will notice and want to join the dance.
